Maya Evans: Epic trek for peace

Hollington Councillor Maya Evans gave a first-hand account of taking part in an epic trek for peace at a meeting on 2 October organised by Hastings Against War. She joined a march that had begun on the Japanese island of Okinawa and would end in Hiroshima Peace Park on the 73rd anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by the US air force, an attack that would leave tens of thousands dead and devastate the city. HAW’s John Enefer reports.

Hastings to Hiroshima

On 2 October, Hastings residents will have a chance to hear a first-hand report of an epic Peace Walk undertaken during the summer in Japan. The account will be given by peace activist and Hollington Councillor, Maya Evans, who joined the walk. John Enefer writes.

Garden of Cultural Delights

A rich array of talent will be on display in St Leonards Gardens on August 12th as the 8th annual Garden of Delights takes place. Acrobats, dancers, singers and musicians will form the varied programme at this popular annual event. John Enefer writes.

Hiroshima Day commemoration 2018

Hastings Against War will commemorate those who lost their lives in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 with a ceremony at the boating lake in Alexandra Park on Monday August 6th. An estimated 185,000 people perished after US airforce planes bombed the cities, dying as a result of the initial blast, due to fires sparked by the bombs and as a result of radiation-sickness caused by the explosions. Insights into the arms industry

Hastings people were given an insight into the arms industry when Wendy Horler of Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT) spoke at a public meeting on on 5 June. CAAT campaigns to end arms sales where they might worsen conflict, assist oppressive regimes, or cause harm by diverting money from essential social welfare spending. John Enefer writes.

Local woman calls for ‘Justice for Palestinians’

At a recent meeting in Hastings, St Leonards resident, Leah Levane, provided an eyewitness account of life in the occupied Palestinian territories. Those attending heard of her experience of being part of the largest ever all Jewish delegation to visit the occupied territories. Leah was one of 130 Jewish people, mainly from the US, who visited Hebron in May of last year. One of their aims was to restore a Palestinian family to the home they were evicted from 20 years ago.
