Walking the walk at ARK Blacklands

ARK Blacklands Primary Academy took part in the recent Walk to School Week, under the enthusiastic leadership of teaching assistant James Bacon, who turned his personal participation into an opportunity to raise funds for the Stroke Association in memory of late council leader Jeremy Birch. Voting campaign gathers momentum

If the health of a democracy depends on the participation of its citizens, voter apathy among young people indicates that not all is well. Last year James Bacon decided to take action by launching the Don’t Count Yourself Out campaign, as reported in HOT. With the general election now approaching, he describes how the campaign is seeking to get young people involved.

Encouraged by the positive feedback from the Don’t Count Yourself Out campaign to encourage young people to engage in the democratic process, James Bacon has given primary school children the chance to engage in debate, and found they weren’t shy of expressing their opinions, as he describes below. He has also gained the support of Hastings’ new mayor as he ventures into new areas to promote the importance of political involvement.

Don’t count yourself out!

James Bacon (above, far left) is a local lad and a recent politics graduate from the University of Bristol. This Easter he launched a campaign to encourage more young people to use their right to vote. Below he explains why he believes that voting is the key to unlocking the door to a better future, where we all have a say in the decisions which affect our lives.
