Five days in May

May Day is getting back to its political roots with five days of cross channel celebrations and protests, spanning from Dieppe to Hastings. HOT’s Grace Vogiatzis reports.

Hastings Old Town – centre of creativity

When we told friends in France that we were moving to Hastings, there were mixed reactions.  The usual one was “Why Hastings?” asked with an air of perplexity.  That was easily dealt with – it had happened entirely by chance.  But one friend followed it up with – “but there won’t be any cultural life there”.  I know what she meant: there’s no theatre to speak of and precious little in the way of classical music, writes Antony Mair.

Morris dancing has always been linked in my mind to village greens, half-timbered pubs selling real ale, cricket matches – the general rural idyll that is now largely preserved in the stockbroker belt.  As a result, it has acquired a sort of UKIP tinge in my mind – red-cheeked men singing Rule Britannia and waving Union Jacks.  Then there’s all that handkerchief waving and general fol-de-rol.  It’s a bit like buying free range eggs in Waitrose – being in touch with the earth without getting your hands dirty, writes Antony Mair.

Route 1066

It has always seemed an odd meeting of minds – the Jack in the Green Festival, the Drummers, the Morris dancers… and the Bikers. Different tribes, different interests, different dress codes but they all seem to jostle along happily together. A real oddity of a social and cultural mix. But it seems to work – in fact it more than works.  The different tribes coexist happily.

Celebrating Norman Race

Norman Race, a well-known stalwart of the local community, left Hastings after Old Town Week last year (2012) and hasn’t been heard from since. A body was recently discovered in the New Forest which has been identified as Norman.

Jack in the Green

This year’s Jack in the Green festival once again featured an eclectic collection of groups and individuals gathering to celebrate the pursuit and eventual slaying of Jack, marking the start of summer – and indeed the sun shone for at least some of this wonderful day. Hastings Online Times’ volunteer amateur photo-journalists give you a flavour of the festival, and issue a call to all those real photographers out there in Hastings and St Leonards – contribute to HOT and send us your photo-stories.
