HBC draws on £1.8m reserves to achieve balanced budget

It’s a tough task again at budget time for Hastings Borough Council to balance the books as government policy increasingly forces it to find its own income. For the second year running there will be a deficit of income against expenditure which will have to be covered from the reserves. Both the budget and the corporate plan for 2019/20 are available on the council’s website and residents are invited to comment on both. Nick Terdre reports.

Humanising homelessness

Harry Tryphonos felt catalysed to write an article about homelessness after seeing the number of homeless people in the Hastings area and the south coast generally – and an awareness of the increasing reliance on charitable causes rather than social schemes to help people.

Cardboard Citizens perform ‘Cathy’

Following their one-off theatrical re-staging of Ken Loach’s seminal work, ‘Cathy Come Home’ at London’s Barbican Centre, the award-winning theatre company, Cardboard Citizens, are now touring ‘Cathy’ nationally – and will be appearing at the White Rock Theatre, Hastings, on 25 and 26 January 2017. The play is a reworking, based around similar themes to Loach’s original work. The hard life at sea

A local photographer was so inspired by the week he spent on a fishing trawler in the North Sea during his final year at uni that he decided to move back to Hastings in order to pursue his continuing passion to document the fishing industry. Hastings photographer Chris Mammone’s exhibition is one of many PhotoHastings shows currently on display in Hastings and St Leonards, and HOT reporter and photographer John Cole went along to the preview night to speak to Chris about his work.

Before I heard of the amazing work of Surviving Christmas, Hastings, writes Beth Davies, I thought that the Season of Goodwill had died alongside Ebenezer Scrooge. However, since 1985 this local charity has been helping the vulnerable people of Hastings, St Leonards and Rother, providing food and company over the Christmas period, delivering hampers and despatching vouchers to local people in need.
