Hastings Musical Festival goes virtual for lack of venue

White Rock Theatre has started to announce new events taking place there as from July 2021, but the Hastings Musical Festival has had to announce it is ‘going virtual’ for 2021 and the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition is postponed from March to late June 2021.  Chris Cormack asks what this says about the future of live music in Hastings.

28 February – 2015 Piano Concerto Competition

This is the first short film, made by Oscar Nominated Director Mike Figgis, from the 2015 Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition. Another film will come soon which will show a range of performances from Stage One of the Competition. Participants and spectators are invited to send us their comments and pictures on any aspect of the Hastings Musical Festival, for publishing in the diary, writes  Chris Cormack.

Virtuoso

At the end of the week PhotoHastings presents an exhibition of photographs taken by John Cole and Alexander Brattell to celebrate the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition 2013-2014. Chris Cormack uses the occasion to consider the impact of this competition.

It’s a few days after the event, but the joys of the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition are still vivid in my memory of a wonderful evening last Saturday.  Hastings is not great when it comes to classical music – events are comparatively few and far between – but this was well worth the wait.  A packed house at the White Rock Theatre listened spellbound to three immensely talented finalists, each accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, writes Antony Mair
