Out Of The Doll’s House: What did the women do during the First World War?

Following last year’s successful Women’s Pop-Up Museum, Hastings Museum, in conjunction with Women’s Voice, is running an exciting new project that aims to explore all aspects of women’s lives during the First World War. Based at the museum, the project seeks to recreate women’s wartime lives through creative writing and artwork. It kicks off on Tuesday 7 July and will ultimately lead to a pop-up exhibition at the museum in mid-October. Project co-ordinator Ann Kramer explains what it’s all about.

World-class BMX and skate facility on seafront

After 17 years lying vacant, a £1.17m funding package is now in place to renovate the White Rock Baths and convert it into a world class BMX and skateboarding facility. Hastings Borough Council (HBC) will soon start work to restore the huge but near-derelict old baths under the promenade to make the building usable, following which it will be fitted out by the instigators of the project, writes HOT’s Chris Cormack.

Entwined with nature

Drawing on its permanent collection, Hastings Museum presents an exhibition comprising an eclectic selection of ceramics, design sketches, still life paintings and botanical illustrations inspired by plants. Roz Cran went to take a look.

Looking beyond the labels

No Labels is a documentary photographic exhibition currently showing at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery. The intention of local photographer, John Stiles, is to show viewers the characters and personalities of some of the people who attend the Seaview Project, asking us to look beyond the labels and see the individuals. HOT’s Zelly Restorick went along to the exhibition and spoke to Stiles about his work.

Two men’s perspectives on Hastings

An exhibition of paintings by two unrelated artists which is now drawing to a close at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery throws a fascinating light on how the Old Town looked in the 19th and early 20th centuries, writes Nick Terdre.
