Women Resist War

At the Quaker Meeting House on 2 May, there was an event themed around women who resisted the First World War, shining a light on those women who aren’t widely known yet, whose stories form part of the wider history of the war. John Enefer writes.

Fly Kites Not Drones 2017

The other day on the East Hill, a drone flew over the trees above my head. The first I have seen. It was on a mission to somewhere. I didn’t like it… I value my Drone Empty sky and regularly express my gratitude for it, aware that in other countries, people have threatening drones in their lives. And if them, why not us – the technology isn’t the monopoly of certain people in certain lands. Here, John Enefer writes about participating in Fly Kites Not Drones.

SOS for our NHS

In London on 4 March, there’s a demonstration in support of investment in our NHS and against investment in Trident: people from Hastings are attending and you’re invited to go along with them. Why are they participating?

A nuclear ban is coming

Next Tuesday, 7 February, they’ll be a local event on a theme of international importance when Hastings Against War host a talk and discussion on the theme of nuclear weapons. In March, the United Nations will begin negotiating a treaty to ban all nuclear weapons. This follows a UN vote last October calling for such negotiations to begin. (1) John Enefer writes.

Drone week of action in Hastings

Sometimes I find myself looking up at the sky and thanking my blessings that I am not being targeted by drones operated by people from distant shores who see me as their enemy. I’m aware that we have military personnel in this country trained in the art of drone warfare, sitting thousands of miles away from their chosen targets for surveillance and attack – and I think: if we’re doing this to other people, why wouldn’t others use the same tactics on us? There but for the grace of God, etc. Zelly Restorick reports.

Maya’s peace walk

A packed Friends’ Meeting House was the venue for a talk by local activist Maya Evans in a meeting jointly organised by the Hastings and District Interfaith Forum and Hastings Against War. The St Leonards resident spoke about her experiences of working alongside people of faith in various countries: Christians in America, Muslims in Afghanistan and Buddhists opposing US bases on the Japanese island of Okinawa. John Enefer writes.

Fly Kites Not Drones

We are flying kites on this day in solidarity with young people who live in countries where drones are causing death, injury and fear: countries like Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Palestine, Yemen and Somalia. Children should be free of war, free to play, to walk to school without fear of being bombed. Rona from Hastings Against War writes.
