Exploring Monteverdi

Barefoot Opera continues to explore new ways of hearing and seeing music with a visual narrative of desire from Monteverdi’s beautiful sensual part songs. In collaboration with Cantemus, a chamber choir specialising in newly discovered and rarely heard music from the Renaissance and Baroque period, this unique event celebrates the 450th anniversary of the birth of Monteverdi.

Choirs sing Bayeux Tapestry into life

Choirs abound in Hastings and St Leonards, filled with people who want to sing opera, gospel, jazz, rock or pop with others for the feel-good, endorphin, oxytocin releasing factor and the sheer love of singing. Now Jenny Miller, Director of Barefoot Opera has brought seven choirs together for two performances of Clash. a work specially produced for the ROOT 1066 festival. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths talks to her about the project.

Root 1066 celebrates Battle of Hastings

This year – 2016 – is the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. Hastings’ attitude is celebrate while you can – why wait 50 years when you might not be around to commemorate the 1,000th? So this year, Hastings is marking the date with an international contemporary festival of the arts, ROOT 1066. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went to talk to Festival Director, Polly Gifford about what will be happening. 

Harmony at Christmas

It has been a great year for musician, Debbie Warren, culminating in a brilliant performance of Benjamin Britten and John Rutter Carols at Christmas and her appointment as Soundwaves Community Choir’s first resident Music Director. HOT’s Chris Cormack looks at Debbie’s achievements in 2015 and carol concerts this Christmas. If you’ve  missed the concerts in the last few weeks you can still get in the mood for Christmas this Saturday at St Mary in the Castle with the Hastings Philharmonic Choir.

Deep in the forest
