Chelsea Flower Fringe to Hastings

A festival of flowers, gardens and gardening will spread its roots to Hastings next month (May), when the Chelsea Fringe arrives in town with a day in Alexandra Park and a talk from author, Travis Elborough. Report by Lynda Foy, photos by Colin Foy.

Ironwork in the park

Blacksmiths have started a three-month project to help an historic greenhouse start a new, working life. Ben Crosthwaite and Tobias Cobrin are cleaning, painting or replacing cast iron and steel  parts on the structure at Alexandra Park, Hastings, so that its ventilation  windows can function again. Take the greenway route to the Conquest

Next Saturday, 11 March, Hastings Greenway Group is holding another walk along the proposed greenway route, from Alexandra Park to Conquest Hospital. A possible breakthrough has been made with East Sussex County Council agreeing to meet the group. Nick Terdre reports. Photos by Tony Polain.

From Italy to St Leonards

Actors Mary Chater and Julian Curry have given up Italy to make their home in St Leonards. Shakespeare enthusiasts, they both number Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre productions of his plays among the many credits in their respective CVs. They gave readings from his plays as part of Harmony One’s recent A Winter’s Tale concert and are in the throes of launching a new initiative, Shakespeare in Italy (see below). Here Mary Chater writes of the transition from life in Italy to St Leonards.

Peace in the Garden

The Peace Garden in Alexandra Park is a beautiful space, open to everyone. Somewhere to explore and sit, contemplate and ponder life – and now some new benches have been installed, which will only add to the overall serenity and sense of peace. HOT’s Zelly Restorick asks Charles Neal, Founding Chair of the Hastings Peace Garden Committee, about how the garden came into being and who has contributed to its evolution.

Temporary roof lets greenhouse work continue

The restoration of the greenhouse in Alexandra Park is now able to continue in all weathers thanks to temporary roofing provided by a local scaffolder.
