One Billion Rising on Valentine’s Day

Hastings Women’s Voice and riart Grrrls have teamed up to organise a flashmob on Valentine’s Day in Hastings Town Centre for One Billion Rising: Eve Ensler’s global campaign to raise awareness about violence against women. Xaverine Bates explains the philosophy of the movement & how to get involved.

In case you haven’t heard of the movement, the statistics are terrifying. According to the One Billion Rising website, one in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime, which leader Eve Ensler and we believe is an atrocity. So the idea is simple: get one billion women dancing on the same day around the world and a revolution is created.

V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls, so on its 15th Anniversary, 14 February 2013, “we are inviting ONE BILLION women and those who love them to WALK OUT, DANCE, RISE UP, and DEMAND an end to this violence … V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sex slavery.”

So for all women around the world, who want to see an end to situations such as these, join Hastings Women’s Voice in partnership with riart Grrrls in our flashmob outside Cafe Nero in Hastings Town Centre at 5.30pm on Thursday 14th February 2013.

We will be dancing to ‘Break the Chain‘ & will be rehearsing the dance in the run-up to the flashmob – details to follow. Join the event via One Billion Rising and Facebook to keep up to date with our plans.

Join the women of Hastings & St Leonards in striking, dancing and rising against violence against women.
