Planning committee proves decisive for pier and Stade

Residents’ voice still ignored as bathing pool site plans advance

Hastings Borough Council is pushing ahead with its plans for a large housing development on the former bathing pool site in West St Leonards, unmoved by the continuing efforts of local residents to have a say in what happens in their neck of the woods. Residents are asked to object to the council’s planned disposal of the site and attend the Cabinet meeting next Monday when their petition will be presented. Nick Terdre reports.

New future about to unfold for Observer building

A new future is about to open up for the former Observer building in Cambridge Road following the exchange of contracts between White Rock Neighbourhood Ventures and the previous owner. A 10-year project to transform the building is envisaged, with a £10,000 Crowdfunder appeal to help kick-start the work. Nick Terdre reports.

The clarity the Foreshore Trust owes the public is missing

The Foreshore Trust continues to say nothing about the future of foreshore assets, as the Stade pathway application continues. The proposal seeks to reroute the footpath and give land to the amusement park. Bernard McGinley takes another look at a case lacking in defenders.

Council set to drop tool for boosting affordable housing

Hastings Borough Council’s plan to introduce a supplementary planning document to encourage the building of more affordable housing is about to be dropped. Meanwhile a planning application shorn of affordable housing has been refused by Rother District Council. Nick Terdre reports.

Residents slam “secret plans” for  bathing pool site

Local residents have slammed the council for preparing “secret” plans to build a large housing estate on the old bathing pool site in West Marina. As well as mounting a petition opposing the plans, they have called a public meeting for Wednesday 9

Children homeless this Christmas – the result of Tory austerity

More than 80 children in Hastings will be homeless this Christmas according to Shelter. And the number is rising. The latest analysis by the housing charity indicates that 83 children in our town will spend Christmas in temporary accommodation – far from the comfort of home. Rick Dillon of the local Labour Party investigates.
