Celebrating 1066

On the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, local historian Heather Grief has published a handy booklet providing an interesting account of the battle and its background and suggesting a variety of ways it could be celebrated. Nick Terdre took a read.

EU grant for improving housing conditions

Hastings has been awarded a second European Union grant to help improve housing conditions in the town, this time in St Leonards. The first project, Climate Active Neighbourhood, was approved earlier this year for the Ore Valley area.

Council loses appeal over pier compensation

Hastings Borough Council has lost its Supreme Court appeal against the ruling that it is liable to pay compensation for business losses suffered when it closed the pier for safety reasons in 2006. However, it says it “retains the moral high ground” after judges decided on a more sympathetic interpretation of the Building Act 1984. Nick Terdre reports.

In a relatively short time, they’ve transformed the gardens by the platform, giving the whole area some TLC. Ongoing work – and here’s the dates for when they’re next meeting for gardening and talking, tea and biscuits – and what’s needed to help progress the project. Zelly Restorick reports.

St Leonards Festival is nearly upon us (9 and 10 July) and Transition Town Hastings are preparing for a fun day on the Saturday. They will be based in front of St Leonards Warrior Square Station rather than Warrior Gardens for a number of reasons.

Country Park eyesore gets to stay

The widely disliked Bunker in Hastings Country Park remains with us following a successful appeal by the owner. The decision is a bitter blow for those who have campaigned for its removal, in whose eyes the council has signally failed to protect one of the town’s loveliest assets. Nick Terdre reports.
