New prize and new business plan for the pier

Hastings Pier has been awarded the Royal Institute of British Architecture’s prestigious Stirling prize, the latest in a long line of awards. Despite widespread recognition, however, the pier is having a tough time finding a sustainable financial model. Now a new business plan has been prepared which will shortly be presented to stakeholders. Nick Terdre reports.

HBC’s ‘Grotbusters’ scheme

The council launched its ‘Grotbusters’ initiative in 2000 as a response to the town’s high number of run down and derelict buildings. It uses a piece of planning law (Section 215 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990) to approach landowners to ask them to tidy up and improve the look of their properties. If property owners fail to do so, they can be served with an Enforcement Notice, which can lead to a prosecution and fine, initially of up to £1,000, then a cumulative fine of £100 a day if they do not do the work.

Hastings in World War I

A free exhibition on local stories of the First World War is underway at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery. Cllr Kim Forward, lead councillor for regeneration and culture explained: “Each year the museum has been highlighting a key theme, alongside ongoing research into the impact the war had on the people and communities of Hastings. This year, they’ve been looking at the war ‘Beyond the Western Front’ and how, by involving over 40% of the world’s population from so many different countries and nationalities, a simple European conflict was turned into the first true ‘World War’.”
