Sustainability on Sea: 22-30 September!

Sustainability… makes sense, n’est-ce pas? This week of events, jointly organised by Transition Town Hastings (TTH) and Energise Sussex Coast (ESC), is celebrating all things sustainable in our local area: gathering together as many of the organisations who are already thinking in sustainable terms. Starting with the ocean symposium, culminating in a big festival day and with all sorts of good stuff happening in between, you are very welcome to come along, check things out and get involved.

Hastings joins day of climate change action

Thousands of actions will be taking place across the world, from Papua New Guinea to Panama, as part of Rise for Climate, a day of action calling for a fast and fair transition to a world without fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas) and 100% renewable energy for all. Fossil Free Hastings encourages local people to participate.

HOT’s Zelly Restorick watched the inspirational documentary, Demain recently at The Electric Palace – about sustainable living and what we can do to survive and thrive in the face of climate change and other environmental threats. For her, the delightful highlight of the film was Rob Hopkins, Founder of the Transition Town movement saying that things don’t need to be all gloom and doom. Things could be FABULOUS! 

Cut your energy costs and get free veg box!

Would you be interested in participating in a research experiment designed to help you cut the amount of energy you use in your home? The team at local not-for-profit organisation, Energise Sussex Coast is looking for local residents who’d be willing to take part in the ENERGISE Living Lab research project, along with thousands of other citizens nationwide. HOT’s Zelly Restorick asks Kate Meakin of Energise Sussex Coast about the research project and what you would receive in return for your participation.

News from the 1066 Local Energy Campaign

The 1066 Local Energy campaign, an initiative from not-for-profit Energise Sussex Coast (ESC), aims to ‘increase community owned renewable energy, keeping money within our local area, decarbonising our energy and creating a fairer deal for us all’. Kate Meakin of 1066 Local Energy and ESC is keen to spread the news and gather support for the various initiatives they are developing.

Local eco show homes sought

Have you made changes to your home to make it more energy efficient? Changes like an eco-refurb? Better insulation? Solar panels? Wind turbine? New heating system or boiler? Damp-proofing? Compost toilet in the garden? Simple DIY measures such as draught-exclusion? Energise Sussex Coast (ESC) is looking for local homes to be included in their Eco Show Homes tour taking place in September and they’d love to hear from you if you’d like to take part. Zelly Restorick writes.
