A book, a town, 53 events, multiple perspectives

The #ATownExploresABook festival is in its third year and this year Robinson Crusoe is the book that has been selected for exploration. HOT writer Erica Smith – one of the many contributors to the festival – gives her take on Crusoe in St Leonards.

Hermit – a life on the margins

Hastings has its own legendary hermit, John Hancox, who lived in a cave in Ecclesbourne Glen for around fourteen years until his death in 1904. Sadly, homelessness is becoming an increasingly important issue in society, and now local community arts organisation, Radiator, has joined forces with the local wellbeing centre, Seaview, to produce a unique event based on John’s life. HOT reporter Cathy Simpson talked to Rebecca Child, who is leading the project along with Mary Hooper and Hilary Turner.

Radiating style!

Hastings-based Radiator Arts is a well-loved community arts group comprised of highly creative, slightly quirky artists.  They are responsible for some of the spectacular, colourful events in the town – who can forget Dancing with Dabs at the Seafood and Wine Festival, the Umbrella Parade during Fat Tuesday week and, of course, Talullah the mermaid at Jack in the Green?  For years they have been holding workshops at community events and children’s centres – but now your kids have an opportunity to join in regularly at Radiator’s newly formed art club!
