8th Hastings Storytelling Festival a huge success

Hastings eighth annual Storytelling Festival came to an end last weekend after a week of some wet and windy but very successful events across town. This year’s festival explored Hastings in a variety of creative ways.

Quentin Blake – celebrating Hastings

Mention the two words ‘Quentin Blake’ and a smile of recognition appears on the faces of both adults and children. Happy memories of childhood books. It is always a pleasure spending time in the company of Quentin Blake’s imagination, so HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was delighted to go and see his exhibition, Life Under Water – A Hastings Celebration.

HiFest is the first annual Hastings Illustration Festival taking place on Saturday 6 December at Sussex Coast College Hastings. It will be a celebration of all things illustration, as well as a fun, interactive, family-friendly event with talks, screenings, workshops, competitions, live drawing and stalls. HOT’s Erica Smith asked fabulous Hastings-based illustrators and co-organisers of the event Nina Cosford and Ali Graham to tell us more.

Jerwood drawings

The Jerwood Gallery, Hastings celebrates twenty years of the Jerwood Drawing Prize with a Drawing exhibition. It highlights drawing as a medium in its own right and features some eminent artists who in the past have been on the panel of the selection committee of the Jerwood drawing competition. Looking around the exhibition, HOT reporter Lauris Morgan-Griffiths was impressed by the diversity of the work – figurative, abstract, conceptual, collage, painting  – but was also confused.
