Slots where slots shouldn’t be

Even in high summer, Hastings Pier is looking meagre still, with more toy animals than visitors. (Closing at 5pm in high summer probably doesn’t help.) Planners back slot machine proposal for central pier rooms

The central ‘Deck’/visitor centre building of Hastings Pier is fully recommended by HBC officers for conversion to two rooms full of fruit machines (‘slots’).  Why are legal and policy protections being ignored? Bernard McGinley tries to peer more closely into the matter.

Hastings pier owner fined for tax offences in Eastbourne

Sheikh Abid Gulzar, the owner of Hastings and Eastbourne piers, has been fined for tax offences deriving from the non payment of Paye and national insurance contributions in connection with his business interests in Eastbourne. Back in Hastings he faces proceedings brought by former pier employees, and has already lost one such case. Supporters of the pier are invited to a community gathering on Saturday morning to “demonstrate that we love Hastings Pier!”The event follows on the announcement that the pier will be closed until March for repair work. Nick Terdre reports, photos by Russell Jacobs.

Pier friends opt for new role

Nearly six months on since the pier passed into private hands, the Friends of Hastings Pier have decided they still want to be involved in helping to ensure the pier’s long-term future. They would like to cultivate a constructive relationship with the new owner but also to perform a watchdog function over matters such as maintenance which are essential to the survival of the iconic structure. Nick Terdre reports.

Hefty bill for HBC following pier appeals

Contesting and settling a claim for loss of business when it closed the pier for safety reasons in 2006 has landed Hastings Borough Council with a bill well in excess of £1 million. Nick Terdre reports.
