A Welfare Benefit Specialist Adviser’s point of view of the current crisis of the benefit system

Becky Polain (not pictured above) has worked since leaving college, solely in benefits, over twelve years for the DSS/DWP and over nine years for a local charity, HARC, that specialises in welfare benefit advice and representation in one of the poorest and most deprived areas of the country. She has witnessed the systematic destruction of a support system, designed to help those that need it most, to create a widespread situation of poverty, ill-health and despair. She shares her thoughts below.

Walk-in Centre campaign gets Swish!

Saturday’s ‘get-together’ outside the Walk-in Centre at Station Plaza was the third and biggest of the campaign’s well-mannered protests so far. Over 70 people gathered outside the Walk-in Centre and shared their experiences of using the facility and why it was important that it remain in the town centre.

Walk-in Centre campaigns continue to raise concerns

This week has been a busy time for people concerned about the potential closure of the town centre walk-in health centre. All week there have been campaigners getting signatures for the Labour Party-supported petition, on Friday 21 September Amber Rudd MP is holding a meeting at Sussex Coast College Hastings, and on Saturday 22nd at 1pm there will be a get-together outside the Walk-In Centre for people to show their support for keeping the service in the town centre. HOT’s Erica Smith gives us an update.
