Gates designed for the Peace Garden by Leigh Dyer

Peace in the Garden

The Peace Garden in Alexandra Park is a beautiful space, open to everyone. Somewhere to explore and sit, contemplate and ponder life – and now some new benches have been installed, which will only add to the overall serenity and sense of peace. HOT’s Zelly Restorick asks Charles Neal, Founding Chair of the Hastings Peace Garden Committee, about how the garden came into being and who has contributed to its evolution.

And then there were five…

The official list of candidates standing for the post of MP for Hastings and Rye was published last week, showing five contestants instead of the expected six. The missing person is David Lofts of the Respect Party, who has decided to stand down. Nick Terdre reports.

SOS: Some people have become cynical about the way our society is organised, e.g. finance, education, work, politics, the tax system and legal system, to mention just a few sectors. Furthermore, in the midst of growing inequality many of our core institutions are now perceived as serving a privileged elite, and neglecting or exploiting ordinary people. What is your view on this issue and what might you do to address the problem?

Hustings in Hastings

Hearing that there are to be hustings in Hastings, where general election candidates are to be asked questions by members of the public, HOT’s Zelly Restorick asked one of the organisers, Chris Connelley, also a HOT writer, some questions of her own to find out more.

Peace bench dedicated in the sunshine

On a bright sunny day, with the breeze rustling the leaves in the surrounding trees, the new bench in Alexandra Park Peace Garden was unveiled last Sunday by the mayor. Nick Terdre was among the crowd.

Hoping for peace…

Alexandra Park is like the lungs going through the centre of the town of Hastings. Next to the rose garden and running alongside the stream lies the Peace Garden. It was conceived as the result of a conversation between the late Kevin Murphy and Sally Cole on 12 September 2001. The garden is dedicated to: “Personal, community and world peace…” Fiona Rankine and Erica Smith tell us the story of the latest development in the Peace Garden.
