Humanising homelessness

Harry Tryphonos felt catalysed to write an article about homelessness after seeing the number of homeless people in the Hastings area and the south coast generally – and an awareness of the increasing reliance on charitable causes rather than social schemes to help people.

Tackling housing and homelessness in Hastings

The government’s relentless imposition of austerity naturally hits the worst-off hardest. Given the drastic shortage of social and affordable housing, finding and keeping a place to live has become a problem for many in Hastings. Peter Chowney, leader of Hastings Borough Council, told Nick Terdre how it is tackling problems of housing and homelessness in difficult circumstances.

No great surprises at Hastings hustings

Tuesday night’s hustings at the Hastings Centre was the last chance to catch all five parliamentary candidates in one place, and probably their last chance to impress a large live audience with their proposals. Nick Terdre sampled the atmosphere and the pronouncements.

Big Sleep participants 2015

Seaview’s Big Sleep coming soon

This will be the second year that people will be sleeping rough at the Stade, raising awareness of homelessness and very necessary funds for the Seaview Project in St Leonards, where staff offer invaluable and vital support to vulnerable people in the community. You can still take part – or sponsor someone who’s actively participating (sleeping rough – even for one night – isn’t for everyone). All contributions gratefully received by everyone involved with Seaview! Zelly Restorick writes.

Hermit – a life on the margins

Hastings has its own legendary hermit, John Hancox, who lived in a cave in Ecclesbourne Glen for around fourteen years until his death in 1904. Sadly, homelessness is becoming an increasingly important issue in society, and now local community arts organisation, Radiator, has joined forces with the local wellbeing centre, Seaview, to produce a unique event based on John’s life. HOT reporter Cathy Simpson talked to Rebecca Child, who is leading the project along with Mary Hooper and Hilary Turner.

Big Sleepers in the Stade open space. Altogether some 150 took up Seaview's challenge to spend a night sleeping rough.

Seaview’s Big Sleep proves a resounding success

Seaview Project’s Big Sleep initiative to publicise the growing problem of homelessness in Hastings proved a resounding success, and there is a good chance it may be repeated next year. Nick Terdre reports.
