‘When The Oak Spoke’

‘When The Oak Spoke’ is a socially engaged art commission led by local visual artist, Beccy McCray for Wadhurst Culture: a community arts charity in Wadhurst in East Sussex. This year-long project reveals invisible forms of woodland communication and gives trees a voice – especially the oak, an important symbol of Wadhurst.

She-bang-ing on!

‘Easter Thursday’ heralded the launch night of a classier-than-average and more-female-focussed-than-usual spoken word night at The Printworks. HOT’s Erica Smith was there to watch The Whole She-Bang kick off and is preparing herself for the second, Election Night Special event.

Preview corner: What’s HOT in February

There’s always loads of things going on in Hastings and the surrounding area. And just because it’s cold and foggy, it doesn’t mean that you can’t get out and enjoy it. Every month we do a round-up of some of the things coming up that have caught our eye, and every month we ask Toby Sargent, our man with the V Reg Maestro, built-in cassette player and the string-backed driving gloves, to write it.

Forget winter with an old-school musical Rom Com and a free Martini!

Kino-Teatr goes from La La Land to Wowtown

“It’s January, it’s miserable and I’ve got that irritating song by ’70s band Pilot going around my head… and then I picked up the Kino-Teatr January programme and got strangely fond of the month…” HOT’s Erica Smith raises a Martini to the diverse entertainment available in one Norman Road establishment.

Gwyneth Herbert Hometown Gig

Gwyneth Herbert plays the Kino-Teatr, Norman Rd on Friday May 13, her first proper gig in St Leonards since moving down here two years ago. She will be accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Ned Cartwright in a performance incorporating vocals, ukulele, french horn, piano, saxophone, percussion, melodica and cheese-grater. There will be tales of sea-drenched sirens, jaded seaside hotels, East End vagrants, loves and losses, drinks and whores and, of course, a touch of Swahili singalong. Who said Variety was dead? Simon Charterton examines the evidence.
