Colourful storytelling by Angie Braven

Angie Braven’s exhibition at the Fleet Gallery in St Leonards simply stops you in your tracks. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths noticed people coming into the gallery, looking around and sighing the word “colour”, as if the sun had just come out from behind a cloud.

Roland Jarvis

Roland Jarvis through his daughter’s eyes

It is not altogether fanciful to refer to Roland Jarvis as an extraordinary man. He was in his eighties when in 2015 he had his first one-person show in Hastings, at the Fleet Gallery. Reviewed at the time by Lauris Morgan-Griffiths, it was an exhilarating exhibition laying out his talents in  his paintings, drawings and installations. Following his death last year, a retrospective has opened at the same gallery. Lauris recalls the man through the eyes of his daughter.

The power of six

The Fleet Gallery on Norman Road is always a surprise. You never know who or what you will see there: Maggi Hambling, Terry Frost, Mary Fedden, Ben Nicholson or – either their work or in person – locals like Roland Jarvis, Laetitia Yhap and Amanda Nicol. Patrick Robbins is a great supporter of local artists and so HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along to see his latest show of ‘6’ (mainly) resident painters.

Colourful abstraction

Fleet Gallery is fast becoming a gallery to watch in St Leonards. Set up by Patrick Robbins, it is gaining a reputation for finding and exhibiting local, contemporary, talented artists; some who have somehow eluded the limelight or not exhibited at all for many years. HOT’s Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went along to see Fleet’s latest exhibition of octogenarian Roland Jarvis.
