Hastings joins day of climate change action

Thousands of actions will be taking place across the world, from Papua New Guinea to Panama, as part of Rise for Climate, a day of action calling for a fast and fair transition to a world without fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas) and 100% renewable energy for all. Fossil Free Hastings encourages local people to participate.

Robust response to ESCC’s greenway cuts

Reacting to East Sussex County Council’s arbitrary decision to cut funding for walking and cycling projects, Hastings Greenway Group has sent a robust response to County Hall stating its priorities and how it plans to see them implemented. Meanwhile greenway supporters walked the Conquest Hospital-Alexandra Park section of the proposed greenway network this weekend. Nick Terdre reports.

Walking and cycling funding cut draws protest

Hastings Greenway Group (HGG) has delivered a strong protest against East Sussex County Council’s decision to halve the budget for a package of walking and cycling routes in order to provide more money for road building, the latest in a series of walking and cycling commitments which have failed to materialise. Meanwhile the group has arranged a walk along the Ore Valley stretch of the proposed greenway route. Nick Terdre reports.

ESCC switches funds to cover road overruns

Costs for two Sea Change Sussex road-building projects have increased, leading East Sussex County Council to switch funds from other projects to cover the overruns. In one case, Combe Haven Defenders note, monies will be taken from a walking and cycling fund to help finance the increase. Nick Terdre reports.

Pier in administration as rescue plan is rejected

Hastings’ pier is no longer a going concern following stakeholders’ failure to support the rescue plan put forward by the owner, Hastings Pier Charity. HPC’s board has resigned and administrators have been called in. However, the pier is expected to remain in operation next year. Nick Terdre reports.

East Sussex issues joint call for fairer funding

With the autumn budget looming, local government leaders across East Sussex have joined forces to call for an end to the constant cuts in funding which have hit public services hard. Nick Terdre reports.
