We Are Here: Black History Month in Hastings and St Leonards

It’s October, and therefore Black History Month. But a lot is different this year, not only in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement and the Covid pandemic, but also as the organisers question whether the interests and contributions of black people should be centre stage for just one month in the year. Cllr Maya Evans, writing in a personal capacity, discusses the issues and describes Black History Month’s programme for Hastings and St Leonards.

New OB Collective

Dawn Dublin and Erika Holland have left The Observer Building (OB)… and the reins have now been handed over to The OB Collective. Catching sight of posters around town, the team appear to have lots of  inspiring creative ideas – and have been working hard to transform the space, making their vision a reality. Zelly Restorick asks John Knowles about the plans to make The OB a hub for community theatre, cinema and arts.

Making it all stack up

When Jeff Kirby came to Hastings for the first time last November to see the Observer Building ‘in order to help out a friend’, the rain was lashing horizontally and he stood opposite the building and shook his head. “My friend had bought the building and asked me to help him make it work. Nothing attracted me to the building – my first thought was to ring up my friend and tell him the best thing he could do was walk away.” HOT’s Erica Smith listens to how his attitude changed.

Breathing life into the Observer Building

It is always amazing to see how generous the Hastings and St Leonards-ites are with their time, energy and creativity to make things happen and improve life for people in the area.
