The Wonder of Trees and Moths

Nature lovers and gardeners can discover the story of moths and trees at an event held at The Bohemia Walled Garden celebrating Heritage Open Day. The nation-wide, annual Heritage Open Day celebrates England’s cultural and architectural heritage. Linda Foy writes.

The restoration of Hastings Pier - a new building arises.

A chance to cherish Hastings’ heritage

Look around you! Too much of historic Hastings and St Leonards has been demolished or abused, or is under threat, but despite regrets some people really like what’s left in the borough, finds Bernard McGinley. Exceptional places are visitable thanks to the Love Architecture Festival and Heritage Open Days.

Behind the walls of the garden

Last time I visited the walled garden, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick, sunflowers were blooming and produce was being harvested. This time, as I passed through the brick doorway, I spied crocuses, rosemary, buds and embryonic bloomings, children playing and adults leisurely preparing the ground for the new season of growth. I’d come to speak to new chairperson, Mary Dawson, to update me on the latest news.

Open doors at the Walled Garden on Sunday 15 September

The Bohemia Walled Garden, located in the middle of Summerfield Woods, a local nature reserve (LNR Site), was built in the mid-19th century as part of the Brisco Estate. The garden, along with a Roman Bath and the Ice House were also part of this grand holding. Over time, however, the garden became neglected and the house itself is now long gone. Christine Mbaye from the Bohemia Walled Garden Association writes about the next stage in the life of this remarkable space.

Horticultural harmony

The Bohemia Walled Garden, hidden within the trees and verdant undergrowth of Summerfields Wood, was once a neglected space in Bohemia, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick. Now transformed by the vision and determination, hard work and perseverance of a team of local people, the Garden’s door will be open this weekend as part of the Heritage Open Day project.
