The 'Deck' or visitor centre on Hastings Pier.

Planners back slot machine proposal for central pier rooms

The central ‘Deck’/visitor centre building of Hastings Pier is fully recommended by HBC officers for conversion to two rooms full of fruit machines (‘slots’).  Why are legal and policy protections being ignored? Bernard McGinley tries to peer more closely into the matter.

Planning committee proves decisive for pier and Stade

Would the Stade footpath get a reprieve? Would the Pier sheds be refused permission? Would sound arguments prevail? Of course not — this is Hastings. Observing the planning committee at work, Bernard McGinley gets the Mugsborough Blues.

The amusement park owner wants to build a new path along the east side of the boating lake, a move that is backed by the Foreshore Trust.

The clarity the Foreshore Trust owes the public is missing

The Foreshore Trust continues to say nothing about the future of foreshore assets, as the Stade pathway application continues. The proposal seeks to reroute the footpath and give land to the amusement park. Bernard McGinley takes another look at a case lacking in defenders.

The amusement park owner plans to build a new footpath alongside the boating lake.

Right to pathway being walked all over

Council duty to stop unnecessary tree felling

Recently HOT heard from one of our regular readers – a local resident who is passionate about protecting green spaces and trees – that plans have been submitted to the council to fell trees (71 of which have Tree Protection Orders) at Beauport Caravan Park. Chris Hurrell, Bernard McGinley and Zelly Restorick report.

The supposed necessity of building over lower Bohemia

Who wants a rich ghetto instead of the green spaces of Horntye Park, Summerfields Woods, the Oval, White Rock Gardens and the Convent? The report proposing it was commissioned by Hastings Borough Council.  Bernard McGinley wades through the jargon and comes up for air.

Visitor centre behind schedule and over budget

Construction of the new visitor centre in Hastings Country Park is not going well. The project is running well behind schedule and costs have risen substantially. In fact, after looking closely at the relevant regulations as well as the council’s own recent references to the matter, Bernard McGinley concludes that planning permission has lapsed.
