Tackling housing and homelessness in Hastings

The government’s relentless imposition of austerity naturally hits the worst-off hardest. Given the drastic shortage of social and affordable housing, finding and keeping a place to live has become a problem for many in Hastings. Peter Chowney, leader of Hastings Borough Council, told Nick Terdre how it is tackling problems of housing and homelessness in difficult circumstances.

EU grant for improving housing conditions

Hastings has been awarded a second European Union grant to help improve housing conditions in the town, this time in St Leonards. The first project, Climate Active Neighbourhood, was approved earlier this year for the Ore Valley area.

Energise Sussex Coast is helping people to cut their energy bills and save up to £200 in the process – and for the Big Happy Energy Day at Sussex Coast College on Wednesday 17 February, residents of Hastings are invited to bring their energy and water bills for checking, get tips on how to make their homes cosier and get help with grants to stay warmer, healthier and safer. The event will be dedicated to the memory of Jeremy Birch, leader of Hastings Borough Council until his untimely death in 2015. Richard Watson writes.

Combating dementia with music-making

Music is a vital lifeline to dementia sufferers whose cruel illness cuts them off from the rest of the world in many ways. This philosophy is the driving force behind the work of Dementia Support East Sussex as they prepare for their second public concert on Saturday.
