Mardi Gras Monarchy

Costume, colour and carnival spirit

Have you got what it takes to join the Hastings Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras Monarchy? Hastings Fat Tuesday means colour, costume, creativity and carnival spirit in abundance, and in all of these, our Mardi Gras Monarchy leads the way, including literally leading the hugely popular Umbrella Parade. Hannah Collison writes.

It's that time of year again!

Let your hair down at the Fat Tuesday festival

The Fat Tuesday festival is upon us, a chance to let your hair down before submitting to the deprivations of Lent, if you’re that way inclined. Alternatively simply a chance to let your hair down. The organisers have largely stuck to last year’s tried and tested formula, with daytime events at the weekend complementing the evening and late-night happenings on the other nights. Nick Terdre takes a leaf through the programme.

Hastings Fat Tuesday was started in 2009 by event producer Adam Daly and musician Bob Tipler and is now the UK’s largest Mardi Gras festival;  It is Hastings’ answer to the New Orleans Mardi Gras, with a programme of live music over five days featuring local, national, and international acts.

Fat Tuesday extravaganza kicks off Friday

Fat Tuesday – Hastings’ version of Mardi Gras or carnival, the days when everyone lets their hair down before putting on a hair shirt for Lent (or maybe in Hastings they don’t) – has taken a quantum leap forward this year to become one of the town’s leading festivals. As the clock ticks down to the opening event on Friday, Nick Terdre takes a look at the cornucopia of musical entertainment on offer.
