Petitions and fake news

The day after the election, a petition entitled ‘Ruddy manipulation to Stop’ was started on the 38 Degrees website seeking to have the election result in Hastings referred to the Electoral Commission, questioning the number of recounts and trust in the proceedings. This petition was later withdrawn.

To frack or not to frack

This morning, I received an email from 38 Degrees about fracking in the UK, talking about the possibility of the government over-riding the community and local council in Lancashire and allow fracking to take place. If this happens, a precedent will be set. How would we feel if the same thing happened here, if maybe Hastings Country Park or the countryside around Battle or Romney Marsh were targeted as an ideal fracking location? Bexhill campaigners take to the streets to warn against TTIP

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, and the secretive manner in which it is being negotiated, have aroused widespread opposition, with more than half a million in the UK signing a petition calling for it to be abandoned. Here members of Global Justice Bexhill and Hastings and the Bexhill Fairtrade Group explain why they joined in a day of action against the treaty earlier this month.

Local activists protest against EU-US trade deal

Bexhill and Hastings World Development Movement group took to the streets last weekend to demonstrate against little publicised moves between the EU and the US, backed by the UK government, which will give private corporations the right to sue governments putting citizens’ interests before corporate profits. Christina Lucey of Bexhill and Hastings WDM reports.
