Political ponderings

Some thoughts on the current electoral and political system and our priorities. Written by HOT’s Zelly Restorick, who wonders if her words will resonate for you?

I feel strongly that the current electoral system is not fit for purpose. It is unnecessarily complicated, out dated for today’s world and neither fair nor democratic.

The electioneering battleground feels resonant of the playground. For one party to say something and for other parties to automatically denigrate their words is not reasoned debate.

If a party only wants to support the needs of their clan and not the needs of everyone, does this make sense?

My impression is that the current system is specifically and consciously designed to be counter-productive.

I know there are good hard working dedicated people working as cogs within the political machine – within all the parties. And I know there are others with far more sinister agendas. Those who do not care about the general populous at all. This has been proven time and time again in the archives of history to the present day.

I feel it would be naive to be trusting and innocently believing of what we are told, when I feel in my gut and heart that the wool is being pulled over our eyes.

Locally, I hear a lot that people contact their councillors and get no response. I have heard that the party lines are: don’t engage.

And as for connecting with those higher up the chain in central government, they may as well be on another planet. I have tried, so I know from personal experience.

The manipulative media moguls play a major role in all of this, holding incredible power, supporting a public figure or bringing them crashing to the ground. Propagating the agendas of whoever is paying the bills.

Which leads to the question: who really is in power? Who are the Master Puppeteers?

Economy economy economy. If our absolute priority is money and profit we are destined for disaster.

IF climate change is truly the threat to our survival we are told it is – and not the latest fear-instilling propaganda – then does it seem strange that it is not the ABSOLUTE PRIORITY of every single one of us? After all, this planet is our home.

Every day we can read somewhere that humanity and other species are in desperate trouble re planetary conditions – that the crisis point has come – gone and is increasing. (410ppm CO2 recently reached, etc.)

MPs Greg Barker and Amber Rudd were both climate change ministers – and just like some of the people working for DEFRA who don’t give a damn about animals, neither of them cared a hoot about the environment. But then, they too are merely disposable puppets on the political stage and if they don’t comply and tow the company line, they will be ousted. They too are individuals with families and responsibilities and a survival instinct. They – like all of us – are part of the universal web.

The planet doesn’t need saving, it is us.

As far as the earth is concerned, we are simply another resident, passing through. Evolving. Adapting. Becoming extinct. Just like all the millions of species that have come before – and will follow after. We believe we’re Number One Species On The Planet, but that is merely our arrogant homocentric view of things.

Now is surely the time for collaborative thinking, not bullying, violence, maliciousness, judgment, blame and fault finding, cut-throat competition.

Life on this planet is as much my responsibility as any politician, local, national or international. We too – each and every one of us human beings – play a role in the bigger scheme of things. It isn’t ‘us’ and ‘them’… we are all individuals involved in the connecting web. All residents of this planet.

Life will go on, with or without humanity.

Very well said Zelly. As you say “Now is surely the time for collaborative thinking, not bullying, violence, maliciousness, judgment, blame, fault finding and cut-throat competition. Life on this planet is as much my responsibility as any politician, local, national or international.” So let’s take the bull by the horns and do something positive in Hastings to change the system. I’m certain that there are others in Hastings who would join us if we set up a new group to encourage Probity in public life and take systemic political, legal, financial and educational action to change our outdated corrupt governance system. In your words “We too – each and every one of us human beings – [can] play a role in the bigger scheme of things. It isn’t ‘us’ and ‘them’… we are all individuals involved in the connecting web… all residents of this planet.” So let’s organise a meeting and start a new ball rolling through the mire of political and corporate corruption in Britain.

Well said Zelly, and if you had heard Peter Chowney’s view on all this, as I did at the hustings last night, you would hopefully be comforted that his priority over all others is to prepare for the consequences of climate change. At least we have one candidate who is prepared to acknowledge this difficult truth – to be fair, the Green candidate would have done this also had they not graciously stepped down to help the Labour cause.
