Jeremy Birch seriously ill in hospital

Council leader Jeremy Birch is seriously ill in hospital, writes Nick Terdre. He was taken ill on Friday lunchtime with what is thought to have been a stroke and rushed to Conquest Hospital.

According to a statement from the council, he remains seriously ill in a coma. On Wednesday morning his condition was described as “critical” by a spokesman for the hospital.

His family has asked for privacy at this time, the council statement said.

“Myself and our whole team are deeply upset,” said Labour’s parliamentary candidate Sarah Owen. “Our local Labour party is like an incredibly close-knit family and we are all in shock. Our thoughts and hearts are with Jeremy’s wife, children and grandchildren.”

Mr Birch’s duties are being covered by Cllr Peter Chowney, lead member for regeneration, until further notice.
