‘One You’ 400-600-600 calorie campaign

‘One You’ is a national campaign designed to ‘help people who are overweight or obese’, which is an issue that affects 57% of adults in East Sussex. One You East Sussex is making available free resources to East Sussex residents to raise awareness around calorie consumption. Zelly Restorick writes.

I really find the labels ‘overweight’ and ‘obese’ uncomfortable, having been someone who was called fat in my early years and know how this has affected me all my life.  However, carrying extra weight can be an increased health risk – heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers – and the idea behind this new campaign is to encourage people to make healthier choices while out and about – and aim for 400-600-600, meaning ‘around 400 calories for breakfast, 600 for lunch and 600 for dinner, plus a couple of healthier snacks and drinks in-between’. The official recommended average daily calorie intake is 2,000 for women and 2,500 for men.

“One You East Sussex is launching their campaign by making available free food-related resources, including ‘fuss-free food swaps’, online videos with tips from One You East Sussex Adult Weight Management Advisors and recipe suggestions”, writes Dave Griffiths from One You East Sussex.

“Free and informal outreach events will be held in April where trained advisors will be on hand to explain the personalised healthy lifestyle services that are available. Such services include free weight management, stop smoking support and NHS Health Checks.

“An exclusive pack of resources will be provided to anyone who signs up to a One You East Sussex service during the Calorie Creep campaign through the website or at an event. Activities will be available at the events to encourage people to explore their understanding of calorie counting, and a mobile clinic room will be on-site to carry out NHS Health Checks for those who are eligible.”

Peter Aston, Health Improvement Principal, East Sussex Public Health, said: “On average we are eating 200-300 calories more than we should every day. Our One You East Sussex service is on hand to advise people through the website, social media, local events, or by giving the service a call.”

Details of the free-to-use services being offered by East Sussex One You, including stopping smoking, losing weight and NHS Health Checks, can be found at www.oneyoueastsussex.org.uk or by calling 01323 404 600.
