St Leonards Post Office consultation

The campaign to save St Leonards Crown Post Office has a new challenge: last week Post Office staff were informed that management are planning to hand over the London Road branch to a ‘retail partner’, who has already taken over three village post office branches in East Sussex, and is about to become the franchisee of Newhaven Post Office. Erica Smith writes.

There is a public consultation which ends on the 9 August which management says will not affect the decision to hand the branch over to Mr Selva Muttiah. Mr Muttiah runs Post Offices in Rottingdean, Saltdean and Seaford, and took over a Post Office in Weybridge last year. He has a background as postmaster of a newsagent/post office counter in Tadworth.

You can pick up a consultation document from the London Road Post Office, or participate online. If you follow this link, it will take you directly to a comments box so you can give your views and state any concerns about the ‘proposed branch modernisation’.

The Post Office is claiming that the ‘refurbished’ premises will offer ‘the same wide range of products and services’ and longer Saturday opening hours. The plan is to incorporate a newsagent in the premises and to have only one partitioned screen counter – plus two ‘open-plan’ positions (similar to a modernised bank lay-out).

The Post Office is holding a ‘customer forum’ soon. The date is yet to be announced, but watch this space, and check out the Save St Leonards Post Office Facebook page.

Kay Avery Stallion of the Save St Leonards Crown Post Office Campaign says: “…by MODERNISATION they mean completely downgrading of the Crown Post Office into another bloody CONVENIENCE STORE!”

The photograph above shows the campaign stall on Saturday at St Leonards Market. 260 signatures were added to the petition.

I wrote to Amber Rudd raising my concerns regarding the potential closure or
downgrading of our Post Office and have received two replies. The first was
a standard rolled out response from her office. The second was more personal.

I quote” I am writing to you to state my determination that any reduction or
degrading of the services which the branch currently provides to our local
    community would be unacceptable”.
She signs off with ” The continuation of Crown Post Office Services in
    St Leonards is absolutely vital.”

The forum is at The Royal Victoria Hotel 3rd August between 15.3- and 19.00
