Books, a never-ending source of learning.

Imagine Nation to launch in Hastings

Where reading begins, learning never ends: a new local charity is to launch in September providing free books to pre-school children. The charity, Imagine Nation, will bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to Hastings and St Leonards-on-Sea, as it explains.

Imagine Nation was set up by teacher and local resident, Annalise Elam. “Dolly Parton’s book-gifting scheme is a simple and effective way to help children do well at school,” she says. “This project is run in affiliation with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

“Imagine Nation’s task is to raise funds so every local child can sign up to the scheme and receive a new book every month, posted through their door, from birth up to age five.

Imagine Nation. Hastings East Sussex.“There is clear evidence that the Imagine Nation Library book-gifting programme is effective. Pre-school children enrolled on the scheme share books more regularly at home. This can lead to improved attainment at school.

“Hastings and St Leonard’s is an area where children historically underachieve relative to children elsewhere in the country. Bringing Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to the locality can make a difference. Imagine Nation can help to improve children’s readiness for school and most importantly inspire a lifelong love of reading.”

Imagine Nation currently provides books to children living in supported accommodation in Turner House, St Leonards.

“We are working hard to build partnerships and raise funds to ensure as many children benefit from the scheme as possible,” Ms Elam says. “If you would like to find out more, or if you would like to support our work, please do get in touch. And let us know if you would like to attend our launch event on 8 September 2016.

“Imagine Nation is also recruiting runners for next year’s Hastings half marathon. Please do get in touch if you are interested in running/walking in support of Imagine Nation. You might even like to get dressed up as Dolly Parton for this event!”
