Latest Transition Town Hastings news!
HOT’s Zelly Restorick watched the inspirational documentary, Demain recently at The Electric Palace – about sustainable living and what we can do to survive and thrive in the face of climate change and other environmental threats. For her, the delightful highlight of the film was Rob Hopkins, Founder of the Transition Town movement saying that things don’t need to be all gloom and doom. Things could be FABULOUS!
With that in mind, here’s the latest news from our very own Transition Town team here in Hastings and St Leonards:
“This summer has been recorded as being the consistently hottest summer since 1976. For most of us that feels like a welcome gift, and makes for much outdoor social time which is never a bad thing. However, it is also a reminder that our climate is changing and the threat of climate change is real. Although we can’t change the weather (and lets face it – do we want to?) we are reminded of the importance of the small things we can do, such as being sparing with our water during a dry spell.
“Water butts are an absolute must for the garden! The obvious – not leaving the tap running whilst brushing our teeth, and the perhaps not so obvious – saving the bath water for flushing the toilet (who decided we should use perfectly clean water to wash away our bodily waste anyway?!) and only using the washing machine for a full load. More helpful tips and advice here.
“So whilst we enjoy the glorious weather, it’s worth reminding ourselves of all the ways we can be the leaders of change. That’s what Transition is about after all. Here’s whats coming up!
How to Plant a Forage Garden – Upcoming Workshop
If you’ve not made it to one of Permaculturist, Anna Locke’s workshops yet, we’d recommend this one. If you’d like to make the most out of the garden space that you have for as little effort as possible, Anna can advise on the hows and whats to make your garden most productive. This one will take place at the RSPCA Centre in Mallydams Wood, Fairlight for the theory and then along the road to Anna’s own Permaculture Farm to see it in practice. Saturday 15 Sept 1-5pm. Transport Stuff…..
As part of the Cycling UK’s ‘Big Bike Revival’ programme of events, Bike Lab Hastings (aka ‘Labyrinth’) will be opening its doors on Sunday afternoons until end of summer and into autumn. Visit them 2-5pm on a Sunday if you’d like help repairing or building a bike, or if you want to donate any unwanted bikes or parts.

‘Sustainability on Sea’: Volunteers Needed!
Sustainability on Sea Week is coming up in September. The aim of this event is to celebrate and encourage sustainable living in Hastings and St Leonards. It runs from 22 – 30 September with a programme of activities to be announced shortly.
The Green Party and Energise Sussex Coast will host ‘The Great Plastic Purge’; Tea ‘n’ Tips with Timberlina (the world’s premier ecologically minded, bearded drag queen) – a family friendly fun event offering thought provoking facts and tips about our plastic use and how to reduce it. Places are limited so arrive early!
Sustainability Week will culminate in a celebratory event at the Stade Space on Sunday 30 September. More details to be announced.

Being N-ice for Coastal Currents
Crafternoon Tea Club will be working with local people living on society’s margins to create special messages about how we can be nice to people and kinder to our planet. Working with The Seaview Project, Gizmo Kids and Dementia Hastings, Crafternoon Tea Club will be exploring the idea of ‘meltdown’ both on an individual and global level. Join the Be N-Ice Lolly Lovers parade and mobile disco, in collaboration with From Pier To Eternity illuminated bike rides, to distribute these messages and help generate a sweet ripple of goodwill across Hastings and beyond, flexing your right to party in the process! Green Drinks in the Park!
Outdoor Green Drinks went well last month so we’re going for another outdoor location – Alexandra Park. We’ll meet by the bandstand (shelter there if it rains!). Wed 29 August 7.30pm. Bring something to drink and snacks to share if you wish. For more details visit the FB event page or contact us.

I use washing up water for the downstairs toilet. We have two 220 ltrs water butts,but it is not enough, as the prediction for the next 4 years of the like summers. Probably buy another water butt and look at the future.
