Moveable Feast Community Garden - A growing community in St Leonards

Winter garden party

This Saturday, the Moveable Feast Garden will be celebrating 6 months in Western Road, St Leonards with a Winter Garden Party, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick. A celebration, to welcome winter and in anticipation of springtime.

The Moveable Feast’s recently appointed Horticulturalist in Residence, Abby Nicol, explained how things have progressed since the waste ground days.

‘The Garden was launched in June 2012, transforming a derelict site on Western Road into a productive garden and vibrant community space.  Set up by members of the Wonky WI, it’s the result of what can be achieved by volunteer energy, community support and a driving vision of creating an edible, learning, community space.

‘Volunteers, charities and local community members come together to grow fruit and vegetables, share skills and celebrate local food.  The harvest is shared amongst everyone involved. The space offers those who don’t have a garden, the opportunity to grow food, as well as the opportunity for those with a garden to acquire growing skills they can apply back home.’

To celebrate both the season and their many and varied accomplishments, the Moveable Feast team invite you to come along on Saturday to take a tour of the garden and see how things have progressed over the past half a year.

You’ll have the opportunity to build a bird box, play games, buy cakes and produce, listen to local storyteller, Rainbow Mary, paint stones, have a sing-a-long and be warmed by freshly made soup and storm kettle brewed tea and spiced apple juice.  Shelter will be provided, so you can go along whatever the weather.

In the new year, Abby will be running a free ‘Grow Your Own’ workshop series.

‘It’s very exciting to be part of the garden, which has achieved so much in so little time and is going from strength to strength.  We’ve had a decent harvest despite the poor growing season and there’s a real community spirit. I’m looking forward to increasing our veg production, running workshops and helping to put on more community events like the Winter Garden Party.  The garden is a wonderful example of what can be achieved by putting food at the heart of our community.  Growing, learning, sharing, harvesting, cooking, socializing… at a time when we’re so divorced from where our food comes from, the Moveable Feast Garden represents what we can all achieve together.”

The Moveable Feast Garden will be open this Saturday, 1 December from 11.30am til 2pm.   59, Western Road, St Leonards on Sea.

Garden winter opening hours : Thursday 11am – 1pm, Saturday 11am – 1pm and Sunday 12pm– 3pm
