Toeing the line…

On Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 April, anti-Link Road protestors marched to the Department for Transport (DfT) to demand the full DfT report on the Link Road was made available to the public. HOT’s Erica Smith put her cards on the table and joined ‘Operation Disclosure’ to search for the uncensored DfT report.

Strip off? No thanks

The proposed strip club in Claremont mobilises the local community to voice their objections. Xaverine Bates explores the pros and cons of such a venture in the heart of the America Ground, Hastings.

World class string quartet fundraises for anti-Link Road campaigners

The Barbican string quartet played to a packed Village Hall in Crowhurst last Sunday evening. Billed as ‘The Road to Nowhere Fundraising Concert’, the show was a sell-out and raised funds for the villagers’ campaign against the Bexhill Hastings Link Road.

Jo Brand joins opposition to Bexhill Hastings Link Road

BAFTA winning comedian Jo Brand, due to appear at a benefit gig this weekend in support of Hastings pier, has clearly stated her objections to the Bexhill Hastings Link Road and her support for all those who oppose its development, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick.

Documenting the destruction

A new exhibition in Hastings town centre by Artists and Combe Valley, an independent artists led group, captures the stunning Combe Haven Valley both before the trees were cut down late last summer to make way for the building of the Bexhill-Hastings Link Road (BHLR) and in the aftermath, writes Sylvia Worthy.

The march that nearly succeeded

Tuesday 19 March marks the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq by the US with the UK government as its principal supporter and a large part of the British population opposing. The highlight of the anti-war movement was the biggest protest march London has ever seen, when around one million people took to the streets of the capital to voice their protest. Ian Sinclair has written a fascinating oral history of the event which he launched in Hastings. Nick Terdre went along.

Libraries services – use them or lose them!

East Sussex County Council is at an advanced consultation stage for its project to improve library services in Hastings by means of a major refurbishment of the existing central library at the Brassey Institute and the next door premises at 12 Claremont which would bring together the children’s and adult library under one roof. With falling library visitors seemingly a long term trend, it is important that Hastings people focus on why they need library services in the 21st century and express their views as to how these facilities may be used more effectively – use them (or lose them!). The Music Libraries Action Group (MULAG) has a vision that deserves consideration, thinks Chris Cormack.

Local residents blow whistles in the snow to stop the Link Road

Today, Monday 11 March, opponents of the Bexhill-Hastings Link Road (BHLR) braved the snow to blow whistles outside the local Department for Transport (DfT) office in Hastings – and leafleted workers going into the DfT’s Information Rights. The action launched a call for DfT workers to “Blow the Whistle on the Link Road” by leaking the Department’s blacked-out recommendations about whether or not to fund the £100m project. HOT’s Erica Smith applauds the campaigners for another creative protest.
