Governance volunteers needed for 1066 Energy

1066 Energy is the campaign for local energy in Hastings and Rother. This really is a fantastic initiative for our area; some local people have been working on this vision for many years, but now it’s rapidly taking shape and needs volunteers.

Council urged to start food waste recycling

Hastings Green Party has launched a Change petition calling for Hastings Borough Council to add food waste to their list of collectible and recyclable materials. Why? The move would cut down on the amount of waste material sent to landfill, reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfilled food waste, provide a useful source of compost and potentially – via anaerobic digestion – a source of energy, plus reduce mess on our streets caused by gulls tearing open rubbish bags containing food. HOT’s Zelly Restorick writes.

Families across Hastings are urged to visit the town’s Energy Café TODAY to access practical free services and money saving advice. UK Power Networks has joined forces with the organisers, Energise Sussex Coast and Citizens Advice 1066, to help bring energy saving tips and advice to those struggling with their fuel bills. They will also be helping people in vulnerable situations to join the Priority Services Register for free extra help in the rare event of a power cut.

To frack or not to frack

This morning, I received an email from 38 Degrees about fracking in the UK, talking about the possibility of the government over-riding the community and local council in Lancashire and allow fracking to take place. If this happens, a precedent will be set. How would we feel if the same thing happened here, if maybe Hastings Country Park or the countryside around Battle or Romney Marsh were targeted as an ideal fracking location? Zelly Restorick writes.

HOT update on solar, salt water and wind energy

Some interesting updates in the alternative energy sphere: osmotic power, solar powered flight and solar bike power, wind power in Scotland, plus some info on a new solar panel roof design. Fascinating to see how those involved in the creation of alternative sources of energy are using their brain cells and the inspirational ideas they’re coming up with – and inspiration for those of us who would like to see more renewable energy sources. Envision an eco-coastal town that produces all its own energy. Zelly Restorick brings us up to date on developments in this exciting – and essential – area.
