Chess tourney another success for Hastings

There was Chinese victory in the Masters tournament of the Hastings International Chess Congress this week, but the congress, now waiting to see how its council grant holds up in the coming settlement, is itself a victory for the town. Nick Terdre reports.

Poor United Suffer Third Consecutive Defeat

A 1-0 defeat away to Tooting and Mitcham, an abysmal performance away at Walton and Hersham on Saturday saw United suffer back-to-back defeats for the second time this season. With the words of Terry White still ringing in the players ears, United faced Chipstead, who they beat by a single goal on the opening day of the season. United were hoping to correct the wrongs and gain three points on this Monday evening, and with a full squad available, there’s no reason why they couldn’t. Liam Willis reports.

United v Merstham - players waiting

Two Points Unnecessarily Lost

A big hand to Simon Rudkins, the phenomenal groundsman of The U’s, whose hard work allowed the pitch to pass the inspection at 11am. United had lost 2-0 to Merstham earlier this season, but with 9 places and 20 points separating the two sides, United were favourites to walk away with three points, regardless of their current form. Frankie Sawyer makes his first start at the Pilot Field since returning last week and is re-joined by Trevor McCreadie, who has been recovering from a knock he suffered a couple of weeks ago. Liam Willis was at the Pilot Field to report the action.
