The U’s – a plea from the heart

Hastings United FC came under the spotlight at the beginning of the year when it reached the third round of the FA Cup and so much seemed possible – there was everything to play for. Liam Willis writes from the heart in an effort to reach out to the supporters of the past and potential new supporters who have seen Hastings make its mark and want to savour the emotional highs and lows that is the lot of the true football supporter.

Smile for Fat Tuesday

Fat Tuesday Cheer

After the rained-out Umbrella Parade on Sunday, it was at least dry for  Fat Tuesday festivities on Tuesday.  Hastings Old Town was packed with people: the event focussed on half a dozen hostelries who imported live bands.  The Dragon, which, it was rumoured, had brought in some well-known musicians at the last minute, spilled out into George Street, where the tide merged with the overflow from the Hastings Arms opposite, writes Antony Mair.

Boyley Skate Park Skate-A-Thon consultation

The weekend of 15-16 February will see exciting action to raise funds for Boyley Skate Park. The redesigned facility at White Rock opened in 2010, dedicated to the memory of local BMX rider, Richard Ball, known as ‘Boyley’, who died in a road accident in 2002. HOT volunteer Richard Hull reports on Phase Two of the park.

St Leonards couple on peace mission to Iran

A few days ago, I spoke to Maya Evans, leader of the first peace delegation to Afghanistan since the West’s invasion of that country in 2001.  A couple of days later, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick, I heard from local resident Emily Johns that she and Milan Rai were about to embark on a trip to Iran, also on a personal mission of peace and reconciliation.  All three are residents of St Leonards.

HOT journalist, Erica Smith, is also the new Chair of the Town Team and here she tells HOT readers about one of the plans to improve the St Leonards’ shopping experience.

Goths aplenty at Butlers Gap

Umbrella Parade is waterproof

Hastings has more than its fair share of festivals and celebrations.  I have never known people more fond of dressing up.  So I suppose the idea of Carnival, with all its implications of costume and general malarkey, was irresistible to the locals.  Think Venetian masks and gondolas, grotesque masks from Cologne’s Faschingszeit or the swaying floats of Rio, writes enthusiastic spectator Antony Mair.
