Pegging his way convincingly down George Street

Dressing-up has never really done it for me.  I usually think of it as the last refuge of the bored, like Marie-Antoinette dressing up as a shepherdess at Versailles.  My heart sinks at the thought of those parties of Vicars and Tarts or invitations accompanied by a note that the theme of the evening is Donald Duck, writes Antony Mair.

The Healing Weed

This Saturday afternoon, 31 May, Steve Danks is talking at The Roomz, St Leonards, about cannabis and its miraculous medicinal powers. Mixing it up with aGender

One of HOT’s writers, Xaverine Bates, is also involved in a cutting edge project working with young people and addressing issues of stereotyping, bullying, sex and sexuality. The aGender project has developed rapidly over the last year or so, from a twinkle in Xaverine’s eye, to a regional programme which tackles sensitive issues using visual and performing arts and creative media. HOT’s Erica Smith asked Xaverine to tell us more!

Bonfire Night 2013

I hadn’t realised,  until I read the programme issued by the Hastings Borough Bonfire Society, that all this November 5th junketing derives from James I’s decree in 1605 that the foiling of Catesby’s plot to blow up Parliament was to be celebrated annually for ever after.  Why the good people of Sussex in particular, should have taken it up with such alacrity, and still use the occasion each year for torchlight processions, bonfires and fireworks, still remains a mystery, writes Antony Mair.
