Last Tango in Hastings : Part One

Hastings tango dancers are becoming a common sight, whether it is along the De la Warr terraces or filling up Hastings Museum at night. There are classes on Sundays and Tuesdays and all sorts of other opportunities. Hastings Tango Club are further honoured by having music specially dedicated to them by Hastings own renowned composer, Polo Piatti, to be played as a World premier at the Hastings Museum Valentine Tango event this Friday 15 February, writes HOT’s Chris Cormack.

How Do They Do It In Hastings?

When I first arrived in Hastings I was impressed to see Opera SouthEast perform here and see other touring opera and ballet appear at the White Rock Theatre.  As a cultural centre, I thought,  surely Hastings ‘punches above its weight’? This did not prepare me for the wonderful performances of my favourite (Mozart) operas being performed over the last four years by the ‘Complete Singer Advanced Course‘ at St Mary in the Castle, writes HOT’s Chris Cormack

Jo Brand stands up for the pier

Jo Brand, one of the UK’s most highly regarded comedians and ex local resident, is coming to Hastings to help save the pier.  She’ll be performing at The White Rock Theatre on March 30th with support from fellow comedians, Doon Mackichan, Angela Barnes and Quincy.  HOT’s Zelly Restorick asked Jo some questions.

History as farce – or tragic-comedy

Guest reviewer Stuart Christie attended the opening night of Dario Fo’s Accidental Death of An Anarchist at the Stables Theatre.

Pinelli – victim of right-wing terrorism

Giuseppe Pinelli, the anarchist railway worker on the circumstances of whose death Dario Fo’s play is based, was far from being a passive victim of events as might be inferred from some of the dialogue, and that may have contributed to his demise, writes Stuart Christie. A youthful anarchist partisan during the war and active in the post-war Italian anarchist and labour union (anarcho-syndicalist) movement, Pinelli was secretary of the Milan Anarchist Black Cross (ABC), set up the previous year.

Eugenio Catone, Front Row Fashion and Billy Childish: all on offer in the area on Saturday 17 November

Spoiled for choice!

For a small town, Hastings certainly punches above its weight for entertainment. Take this Saturday for example… our What’s On guide has 18 events listed, and they cover everything from high fashion to The Accidental Death of an Anarchist, from old punk Billy Childish telling stories to an international piano concerto and Haydn’s Creation.

Billy Childish

The Hastings Storytelling Festival runs from Monday 12 to Sunday 18 November. Nearly all the events are child-friendly, but not Billy Childish who performs at St Mary in the Castle on Saturday 17 November. This is a rare spoken word gig from the Bard of the Medway – but don’t make the mistake of labelling him a ‘Poet’.
