A new, old kind of music

Do you like Björk and her views on music? Well, maybe a good introduction to the music of Arvo Pärt, before seeing it performed live by the Hastings Philharmonic Choir, is to watch an interview she had with Pärt on his music, writes HOT’s Chris Cormack.

Voice Squad

Tracey Johnson and Claudine Eccleston both love Reggae music and wanted to start a choir singing Reggae, Soul and Funk, writes HOT’s Bev Francis. Between them, they began their own choir and they had some fun sharing songs with friends and singing along to a backing track, but as Tracey told me: “What we were really doing is group karaoke. We had the will, but not the knowhow. That’s until we met Micky”

Opera South East paints town red

Passion turns to jealousy. Hope turns to despair. Order turns to anarchy. Beneath the blazing sun, a bull is slaughtered for sport, as outside the arena a gypsy girl lies dead, murdered by her jealous lover. Passion and brutality dance hand in hand in a spectacular, full-scale production of ‘Carmen’ at the White Rock Theatre on the 24 and 25 October.

Eddi Reader comes to St Mary in the Castle

Eddi Reader singing the line ‘It’s got to be perfect’ from Fairgound Attraction’s hit single Perfect had a profound impact on my life in 1989, when it was the UK number one single, writes HOT’s Zelly Restorick. I was engaged to be married – and the song seemed to highlight how things between my fiancé and me were anything but perfect; I ended the engagement and have subsequently  experienced no regret. Much like my relationship, Fairground Attraction hit the heights and then dissolved, but singing, song-writing and musical collaboration have continued to be a central theme in Eddi Reader’s life.
