Unique opportunity at Composers’ Festival

As we came out of our third concert in two days of the second International Composers Festival, someone said “In the end, I’d prefer to hear some Beethoven”, thus showing he had entirely missed the point of this wonderful event.  Beethoven can be heard in bucketfuls on the radio and in concert halls.  We had had the unique opportunity to hear works recently created by some prodigiously talented composers, and performed by equally talented musicians, writes Antony Mair.

Drummer and local resident, Jamie Harris, has lately been directing his energy and inspiration into organising a concert at The Roomz, in aid of refugees from Syria. HOT’s Zelly Restorick asked him some questions to find out more.

Do you believe in magic?

Prepare for invasion – a troupe of young and exuberant singers are taking over St Mary in the Castle!  Barefoot Opera Young Artists, after their great success last year with Mozart’s Magic Flute, bring a characteristically fresh, physical and original production of Purcell’s operatic masterworks: The Fairy Queen and Dido and Aeneas, writes HOT’s Chris Cormack.

Indian classical and jazz musicians celebrate Mandela at St Mary’s

Maestro Deepak Ram will celebrate classical Indian composition with  bansuri flute and tabla player Manjeet Singh Rasiya at St Mary in the Castle next week. In the second half, they will also be accompanied by Terry Pack on double bass, Andy Williams on acoustic guitar and Nana Tsiboe on percussion for a memorable programme of jazz fusion that echoes a millennium concert given on Robben Island in honour of Nelson Mandela, writes HOT’s Chris Cormack.

Hail St Mary’s!

St Mary-in-the-Castle has succeeded in completing the formalities for establishing its new management structure as a charitable trust and company limited by guarantee under the supervision of an  independent board of trustees. The trustees designate have been meeting for the last six months to plan how they will run the venue. Last week Charity Commission approval was obtained, writes Chris Cormack.

Accordion heaven

For lovers of the accordion this was indeed a weekend to be remembered with not one, but two outstanding performances. On Friday night we were treated to the dry wit, political satire and Jewish Klezmer punk of Canadian Geoff Berner and his stripped down band of violin and paired down drum kit. On Saturday we had the Tiger Lillies, playing dark songs with disturbing lyrics at the Stade. HOT’s John Knowles was there.
