Cannes, a very super market

Hastings and St Leonards are developing quite an affinity with the quaint and unpretentious town of Cannes: first St Leonards featured at the Straight 8 Film Festival there last July, then we hosted the Trash Cannes Festival in October. Now Christine Kimberley gives us an exclusive personal account of her recent visit to the festival

Hastings Film Makers Festival 2013

Doors open for home-grown film festival

Bringing horror Hollywood to Hastings

Hastings will soon have claim to international cult film fame when the Cult Film Archive moves here from London. It is the world’s only research centre that contains over 4,000 international movies which will be used as a resource for the new BA Honours degree in Digital Film launched by the Hastings arm of the University of Brighton in October. Linked to the archive and degree course is the annual Cine Excess Cult Film Festival which will be held in Hastings, St Leonards and Brighton in November.  HOT reporter Lauris Morgan-Griffiths went to see the man behind this cult phenomenon, Dr Xavier Mendik.

Lesbian Vampirism

Hastings is soon to host the Ingrid Pitt Memorial Horror Film Festival (26-28 October – see also Joe’s earlier interview with the festival organisers). HOT reporter Joe Fearn reviews Hammer’s The Vampire Lovers, to be screened during the festival at the Electric Palace Cinema in the Old Town, and he examines Lesbian Vampirism, a trope in 20th-century exploitation film that has its roots in Joseph Sheridan le Fanu’s 1872 novella Carmilla.
