Hastings Fringe Festival 2018 launch

The original idea for the festival, catalysed by artistic director and writer, Heather Alexander, was to create a platform to showcase new and original works by local talent – and it took place at The Stables in 2015. This year’s festival, bigger and bolder than previous years, takes place through June and July at various venues in Hastings and St Leonards on Sea with a wide spectrum of performers. The Hastings Film Fringe takes place from 27 – 29 July at the Electric Palace Cinema. There is so much to see and do! Enjoy!

Bloomsday 1066

Hastings is getting ready to celebrate Bloomsday in one of the most appropriate places possible for an important modernist text:  Hastings Library or the Brassey Institute at Claremont in the town centre. Lucy Brennan writes.

Claudia de Grandi in her studio

Waves and Horizons

Like so many people, when artist Claudia de Grandi moved to the Hastings area twelve years ago, she fell in love with the sea. She started painting small watercolours at her favourite swimming spot, but over the years her obsession with the sea – and the size of her paintings – has grown. Erica Smith went to visit her whilst she was preparing for her open studio event this weekend.

Soundings: in search of one father’s war

In March 2017, on a visit to Venice, artist Kate Gritton found herself wandering the corridors of the Jewish Museum. Turning a corner, she came face-to-face with a photograph of a group of people, one the spitting image of her father. The exhibition featured British soldiers in World War II during liberation, but as far as Kate knew, while her father had been in Italy, he hadn’t been stationed in Venice. Thus began a journey of discovery, the expression of which are the 23 paintings that form Soundings, a month-long exhibition, which opens on 29 May at the Hastings Arts Forum. Here, A. Vasudevan catches up with the artist.

A fold in time and space

Fold is a new exhibition by visual artist, Sharon Haward, who has thirty years experience of developing a multi-disciplinary practice hinging on the exploration of site and sense of place. She is exhibiting a range of assemblages and objects inspired by Modernist architecture and the contributions made to it by female and male architects and designers. The work on show has been created during a short residency at The School Creative Centre, Rye. HOT’s Zelly Restorick asks Sharon about the new exhibition, her inspirations and goals.
