The best deal “by far” for St Mary in the Castle

Hastings Councillors vied with each other for superlatives to comment on the future vision for St Mary in the Castle (SMIC) as presented to the Cabinet meeting on Monday 3 December, which would “establish SMIC as a cultural destination for the South East”. Our report of these developments is followed by personal comments from HOT volunteer

The annual Sussex Heritage Trust Awards are designed to recognise high quality conservation, restoration and good design of newly built projects. The Jerwood Art Gallery, designed by HAT Projects, was the recipient this year of the Public and Community Award, and HOT reporter Joe Fearn went along to see the hand crafted slate plaque being officially attached to the building in the gallery courtyard.

‘A Congress of Curiosities’

Following on from The Big Jam Project, Hastings artist, Laurence Poole, will be exhibiting his latest collection of assemblage sculptural works at Trinity Art Gallery in Hastings.  The exhibition, called ‘A Congress of Curiosities’, includes HAL the NostalgiaBot, a man-sized robot with a TV head and plasma ball hands! Hot reporter, Joe Fearn has seen a preview and was very impressed. HAL’s body is constructed from a guitarist’s amplifier with a television for a head, which will be playing Dalek movies and old episodes of ‘Monkey'(!).

I won't sleep til I devour you © Tabitha Knight

The art currently on show at The Kave is mainly a personal narrative concerning the breakdown of a relationship. Tabitha Knight echoes Sartre in showing the apparent impossibility of the individual to achieve harmonious personal relationships. The very attempt earns the title The Fool’s Journey. Knight isn’t portraying, (as Sartre did), all personal relationships as essentially power struggles, incapable of resolution, rather, her art repeats the cry of Amy Winehouse that Love is a losing game. Hot reporter, Joe Fearn, went along to the private view and discussed how art may reflect life with the artist and visitors.

Following on from the French and English coastal art events, “Horizon” at Sangatte and “I can hear the sea speaking” at Dover, Studio 21 bis have installed an artwork at The Space in St. Leonards on Sea entitled Night Watch. HOT’s Joe Fearn hot-footed it down Kings Road to check it out.

Laurence Poole, The Big Jam

Hastings ‘Big Jam’ Arts Project: 8–23 September

Trinity Gallery Hastings is offering people the chance to win an exclusive artwork that may be worth thousands of pounds for only a fiver! Currently, and during the run-up to the Hastings and St. Leonards Coastal Currents Festival, (8-23 September) visitors are invited to donate a small ‘Matchbox’ sized model car (just one per person) and £5 to the Trinity Gallery ‘Big Jam’ arts project, where Hastings artist Laurence Poole will use the cars to create an original assemblage sculpture. The completed sculpture will then be raffled off on the final day of Coastal Currents (Sunday 23 September). All proceeds will go to St Michael’s Hospice, St. Leonards.
