Blind Blake by Paul Marsh

Picturing The Blues

A pop-up exhibition Picturing the Blues showcases the work of Paul Marsh and will be held at the Bohemia Village Voice, 79 Bohemia Road, St Leonards-on-Sea on the weekend of 15/16 November and there will be a musical intermezzo with Steven and Jada on cello and violin, writes Bill Third.

Freddie King by Paul Marsh

Paul has been a devotee of Delta Blues since his early teens and was inspired to
pick up pencil, crayon and brush to try and capture the character and essence of
Blind Blake, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Willie
McTell.

There are very few pictures of some of the early bluesmen – just two known of Robert Johnson for example – so Paul has worked from these scarce sources and
lovingly recreated their images with a freshness and zest that lets their character
shine through. Clever use of background paper, crayon and charcoal gives the
works a luminous quality.

Paul, handles skin tones from sepia photographic originals particularly well, but
as this exhibition shows, he is equally adept at capturing the essence of more
contemporary artists from Amy Winehouse to the Beatles in brightly-lit, brightly
coloured settings.

Picturing the Blues will be open from noon to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday 15/16 November 2014 at Bohemia Village Voice office, 79, Bohemia Road TN37 6RJ.                                                                                     Saturday 15 Sunday 16 November 2014.                                                    Refreshments will be available.
