Anna Bachène

New shows from Zoom and Zuzushii

In addition to the photography exhibitions reported elsewhere, two new art shows are under way courtesy of Zoom Arts and Zuzishii Art Laboratory.

Anna Bachène

Zoom Arts stalwart Anna Bachène has a winter exhibition at Oscar’s on the Square, featuring several new pieces of work. She has a strong interest in fantasy story telling using vibrant colours and enigmatic, glamorous  characters which play with her light-hearted sense of humour and joy in narrative.

An accomplished painter and collage artist, Anna has been exhibiting in and around Hastings and St Leonards for over 10 years since moving her practice from London. She is an active and valuable member of the Zoom Arts community group, with whom she exhibits regularly.

Winter Exhibition: Anna Bachène Oscar’s on the Square, Lower Promenade opp Warrior Square, TN37 6FA. To 1 December, Wednesday-Sunday, midday to 8pm. Private view Friday 12 November from 7pm.

Parroting, the new show at Zuzushii Art Laboratory, brings together the work of artists Josie Rae Turnbull and Kate Tipler, opening a conversation on human perspectives of nature in the built environment. Just as a parrot mimics human language without understanding the linguistic meaning of the sounds it is making, so do we echo fragments of what we see in the world around us, without having the capacity to fully understand these forms, says Zuzushii.

By extension, the artists mimic this action, reflecting parts of reality by taking photographs and reproducing them in inverted forms.

Both artists are back in the UK after spending several years in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Josie (@friedspectacle) is an artist and art educator from London, who is currently studying for an MA in Art and Science at Central Saint Martins. She is currently expanding her lens-based practice into multimedia printmaking and cast sculpture.

Kate (@katetipler), originally from Hastings, is now based in Bristol. After studying Comparative Literature at Goldsmiths University, she has also worked as a journalist, editorial photographer and educator. More recently, her practice has given her the space to experiment further with photography alongside textiles, installation and participatory performative events.

Parroting: Josie Rae Turnbull and Kate Tipler Zuzushii Art Laboratory, 26 White Rock, Hastings, TN34 1JY. Monday 1-Sunday 7 November and Wednesday 10-Sunday 14 November, 10am-5pm.
