The Great Survey with Wildworks

As part of the ROOT1066 International Arts Festival, Hastings Council has commissioned WildWorks Theatre Company to come to Hastings to make a show about us… and they need your help to create it. Michael Hambridge, Arts and Cultural Development Officer for Hastings Borough Council reports.

‘The Great Survey’ isn’t a conventional theatre show – there won’t be a beginning, middle and an end; it’s a rolling performance, installation and conversation, which will evolve over three days with an audience.

WildWorks have developed a national and international reputation because of their unique style and the way they involve local participants. Bill Mitchell, the director of WildWorks says: “We want to celebrate everyone who has chosen to live here. We want to work with as diverse a cross section of the community as possible. Please come along and take part – however long you’ve lived in the town.

“The Domesday Book of 1086 was a great survey of the wealth of England, which documented land and property. We want to create a new great survey and explore the present ‘wealth’ of Hastings. We understand the riches of Hastings to be the people and the various communities that make up the town.

“We want to work with you to make an artistic archive of people who live in Hastings now. Performances of The Great Survey will take place on ‘Ladies’ Parlour’, next to the castle on the West Hill from Thursday 8 September – Sunday 11 September between 1 – 7pm daily.

“No previous performance experience is necessary. We will be asking what people bring to their community and what they get back. Making this will be a gentle process: just be yourself. The show will evolve over the three days as the audiences share their experiences with you. This conversation is the heart of the project.”
